Robotic Surgery Pioneer with Thousands of Procedures: World-Leading Expertise in Urologic Cancer & Minimally Invasive Surgery

Dr. David Josephson is a recognized pioneer in robotic and minimally invasive urologic surgery.
With extensive training in both traditional open surgery and the latest minimally invasive techniques, he brings a comprehensive approach to treating complex urologic conditions. Having performed over 3,000 robotic procedures throughout his career, he has also trained countless surgeons in this procedure.
Dr. Josephson has established himself as a leader in advanced surgical techniques that help patients recover faster with better outcomes.
Dr. Josephson specializes in state-of-the-art robotic surgery using both single-port and multi-port technology to treat all types of urologic cancers. He’s at the forefront of innovative approaches to prostate cancer, including focal therapy—targeted treatments that can preserve healthy tissue—and nerve-sparing prostatectomy techniques designed to help patients maintain quality of life after surgery. For kidney cancer patients, he performs kidney-sparing procedures that preserve as much healthy kidney function as possible.

His work with Intuitive Surgery has focused on using advanced imaging technology during surgery to ensure the most precise cancer removal possible, reducing the chances of leaving any cancer behind.
Dr. Josephson has been among the first surgeons worldwide to perform several groundbreaking robotic procedures, including robotic lymph node removal and complex bladder reconstruction surgeries. His innovative techniques have advanced the field and improved outcomes for patients with difficult diagnoses.
What drew Dr. Josephson to urology was more than just the surgical precision—it was the ability to be there for patients over the long term. “I loved the fact that I can continue following my patients and establish a long-term relationship with them for decades without having to operate on them,” he explains. “In many ways, I became their primary provider after dealing with their urologic issue.” This commitment to staying with patients throughout their journey, not just through surgery, sets his practice apart.
Dr. Josephson’s research has been published in the field’s leading medical journals, and he has been repeatedly recognized as one of Los Angeles’s Best Doctors and America’s Top Urologists and Top Surgeons for Robotic Surgery.
DR. JOSEPHSON'S PATIENTS TALK ABOUT HIS QUALITY OF CARE
He is Board Certified in Urology and actively contributes to the field through his memberships in the Society of Urologic Oncology, American Urological Association, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and American College of Surgeons. He also serves as an advisor to national cancer treatment guideline committees, helping shape the standards of care for kidney and testicular cancer across the country.
A Los Angeles native who grew up in West LA, Dr. Josephson still calls the area home, living close to Cedars-Sinai with his wife, two teenage children, and their two golden doodles. When he’s not in surgery or seeing patients, he enjoys Mediterranean cuisine, pasta, and being active with cycling, tennis or swimming
